Both concepts were based on expectations that the United States would continue its course of “promoting democracy” in Asia. However, these calculations proved to be incorrect. Despite the failure of the first initiative, Abe repeated a similar approach during his second term. The authors examine why Japan did not revise this ineffective strategy: was it constrained by American frameworks or attempting to overcome them through Abe's diplomacy? Were alternative approaches explored? The study identifies the reasons for this strategic persistence in Japan's political culture, where loyalty to the U.S. as a post-war ally remains an unconditional imperative. This leads to the so-called Madame Butterfly syndrome – recognizing the deadlock without revising the course. Abe's Eurasian policy was instrumental, aimed at containing China, which limited its effectiveness despite significant untapped cooperation potential.</p>
Это ограничило ее эффективность, несмотря на значительный нереализованный потенциал сотрудничества.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>Shinzo Abe</kwd><kwd>“The Arc of Freedom and Prosperity”</kwd><kwd>“Asia's Dream: Linking the Pacific and Eurasia”</kwd><kwd>Eurasia</kwd><kwd>geopolitics</kwd><kwd>Japan + Central Asia dialogue</kwd><kwd>Japanese-American alliance</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>Синдзо Абэ</kwd><kwd>«Дуга свободы и процветания»</kwd><kwd>«Мечта об Азии: связывая Тихий океан и Евразию»</kwd><kwd>Евразия</kwd><kwd>геополитика</kwd><kwd>диалог «Япония + Центральная Азия»</kwd><kwd>японо-американский союз</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group><funding-statement xml:lang="en">The article was prepared with the support of a grant by the Institute for International Studies of the MGIMO University, Project № 2025-04-04.</funding-statement><funding-statement xml:lang="ru">Статья подготовлена при финансовой поддержке гранта Института международных исследований МГИМО МИД России № 2025-04-04.</funding-statement></funding-group></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Денисов И. А.
